What Hiking Taught Me About Financial Wellness: 5 Lessons for Building Financial Confidence
I have been hiking for several years now, and when I first started, I honestly had no idea what I was doing.
In many ways, hiking was a lot like navigating my own financial challenges. I needed guidance, support, and people who could help point me in the right direction.
Thankfully, I found an incredible hiking group, and with every trail I explored, I learned a little more along the way. The same has been true in my financial journey. I am deeply grateful for the people who encouraged me, shared their knowledge, and helped me build confidence with my finances over the years. Their support ultimately inspired me to become a Certified Financial Counsellor and launch Wellness Financial Coaching Inc.
Recently, while hiking to Summit Lake, I found myself reflecting on how closely hiking and financial wellness mirror one another. I tend to do some of my best thinking surrounded by mountain air and breathtaking views.
When you start a hike, you lace up your boots, take a deep breath, and begin walking — often without being able to see the entire trail ahead. Step by step, you navigate steep hills, uneven terrain, changing weather conditions, and moments when you wonder if the climb is worth it.
The journey toward financial wellness is much the same.
Many people believe financial success is about reaching one final destination — becoming debt-free, building wealth, or finally feeling confident with money. But true financial wellness is not achieved overnight. It is built through small, consistent actions taken over time.
Just like hiking, your financial journey requires:
Patience
Preparation
Resilience
Support
A willingness to keep moving forward, even when the trail feels steep
Every step matters. Every lesson learned builds confidence, strength, and momentum toward the life you are creating.
What Hiking Teaches Us About Financial Wellness
1. You Don't Need to See the Whole Trail
One of the biggest reasons people avoid working on their finances is because the journey feels overwhelming.
But experienced hikers know something important: you do not need to see the summit to begin.
Financial wellness often starts with one simple step:
Creating a budget
Tracking expenses
Building an emergency fund
Paying down debt
Improving money management habits
Small actions create momentum, and momentum creates lasting change.
2. Extra Weight Makes the Journey Harder
Anyone who has carried an overloaded backpack knows how quickly extra weight drains your energy.
Financial burdens can have the same effect.
Some of the weight we carry includes:
Consumer debt
Financial shame
Overspending
Comparison
Unrealistic expectations
Part of financial empowerment is identifying what no longer belongs in your backpack. Sometimes simplifying your finances creates more peace than striving for perfection ever will.
3. Every Trail Has Uphill Seasons
Some sections of a hike feel effortless. Others challenge every muscle in your body.
Life brings financial uphill seasons as well:
Rising living costs
Unexpected expenses
Job loss or career changes
Divorce or separation
Caregiving responsibilities
Starting over financially
An uphill climb does not mean you are failing.
It means you are growing.
The strength and resilience you develop during difficult financial seasons often become the foundation for future confidence and financial stability.
4. The Right Support Makes a Difference
Most hikers do not venture into unfamiliar terrain without some form of support. They use maps, guides, hiking groups, or experienced companions.
Your financial journey is no different.
You were never meant to navigate financial stress alone.
Working with a financial coach, seeking financial counselling, or participating in financial literacy education can provide the tools, knowledge, and encouragement needed to move forward with confidence.
Sometimes the most powerful step you can take is asking for help.
5. Celebrate the View Along the Way
Too often, people wait until they have "arrived" before acknowledging their progress.
But every financial win deserves recognition.
Celebrate milestones such as:
Paying off a debt
Building your first emergency fund
Feeling less anxious about checking your bank account
Having honest conversations about money
Creating healthier financial habits
These victories matter.
Because financial wellness is about more than money.
It is about creating freedom, confidence, peace of mind, and a healthier relationship with your finances.
